One week.

That’s how long until a 13-year drought of State Fair Community College soccer ends in Sedalia, when both the men’s and women’s programs begin practicing. SFCC soccer released its regular-season schedules recently, and head coach of both programs, Eddie Horn, kept SFCC alum in mind when compiling the soccer teams’ fixtures.

The Lady Roadrunners begin its season Aug. 17 with a scrimmage against Kansas City Kansas Community College at 2 p.m. KCKCC is coached by Shawn Uhlenhake, who played for SFCC in 1998.

On the men’s side, William Woods comes to town for a friendly Aug. 16 at 5 p.m. Nathan Mason, who played at State Fair in 1999.

Horn said Mason was one of the first guys he called when creating the schedule.

“He was thrilled,” Horn said of Mason’s reaction to SFCC soccer’s return. “He would be the first person to tell you his first few years here changed his life. The State Fair soccer program was a huge part of him going down this path.”

Both teams begin their regular season schedule on the road at Columbia College, where John Klein coaches the men’s and women’s soccer programs.

“That’s more of a personal connection,” Horn said. “I’ve worked a lot of camps with John Kline. He’s done a tremendous job into building both of those programs into national contenders. He was an obvious perosn to reach out to.”

While complete rosters have yet to be released, Smith-Cotton grads are expected to assist the men’s and women’s soccer programs at SFCC.

All-State goalkeeper Landon Dove and All-Conference midfielder Maddie Davidson will join the Roadrunners and Lady Roadrunners, respectively, for the fall 2016 soccer season.

“When you start building a team, you start working down the spine,” Horn said. “I think any coach will tell you, you have to have a good catcher in goalkeeper.

“(Dove) is going to have his work cut out for him keeping a clean sheet. We have really high expectations for him.”

Horn said Davidson was the first woman State Fair signed.

“You’ve got to have someone who can control the game, distribute the ball and put penetrating passes into the front third,” Horn said. “You have to have a quarterback, so to speak, and that’s going to be Maddie for us.”

Home State Fair soccer matches are scheduled to be played directly west of the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center on the SFCC campus.
