Grow and Glow Garden Club FGCM

The Grow and Glow Garden Club FGCM October meeting began at the Tipton United Methodist Church parking lot, where Gay Nau offered potted plants that she had brought in from her garden. When the group had assembled, they continued with an autumn leaf peeking drive to the Boonville area. The 14 members enjoyed lunch at the Route B Diner. Following lunch, President Linda Dahl conducted the business meeting. Reports of members with health issues were given. Dahl reported on the plans for the 2024 FGCM State Convention to be hosted by Central District May 7-10.  The Grow and Glow Club is in charge of the Hospitality Room from 3 to 6 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday of the event.

The Sept. 28 Fulton District Fall Meeting report was given, with five members, Cynthia Brodersen, Nancy Byars, Ruth Burlingame, Peggy Moon, and Dahl attended. On Oct. 10, Nau, Linda Reid, Barbara Harrison, Dorothy Collett, and Dahl worked at the roadside park in Tipton removing old growth for the winter season. The city workers assisted, removing the overgrown shrubs around the Blue Star Memorial.

The president gave a review of the 2024 yearbook plans and decisions still needed so Debbie Ellis Harper can complete the publication.

A nominating committee of Harrison and Charleen Meyer was appointed to select club officers to serve the next two years. They will give a report at the November meeting.

Dues for the 2024 year are payable to Reid to be submitted to the state treasurer before Oct. 31. It was agreed that the club would continue to give a $20 donation to five state projects: Powell Gardens, Springfield Botanical Garden, Missouri Prairie Foundation, USA Disaster Relief, and Youth Poetry Contest Fund.

Vision of Beauty Calendar \orders can be made at this time.

Dorothy Collett, program chairperson for November, gave suggestions of supplies to bring to construct terrariums. The November meeting will be at the Tipton United Methodist Church with an optional Pre-meeting Member Lunch at 11:45 a.m. at Bobbio’s in Tipton. The November meeting will be Nov. 14 a week earlier than normal because of Thanksgiving.

October birthdays honored were JoAnn Collier, Reid, Ellis Harper, Dala Yontz, and Kendra Johnson.

At the close of the meeting the group enjoyed a tour of Vintage Hill Nursery north west of Boonville, where they viewed many unique plants and shrubs as well as beautiful pottery  containers and garden art. Everyone agreed it was a perfect day weather wise for the visit.

Helen G. Steele Music Club

The Helen G. Steele Music Club’s “Passport to Music” theme continues as members explore the Music of Scotland at the Heard Memorial Club House at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 25.

Music Club President Cindy Payne Decker opened the meeting with announcements and greeted guests and new members. Secretary Dr. Rhonda Chalfant read the minutes of the previous meeting. Heard House Board President Marty Graves announced board fundraiser events planned.

Member Sheryl Heisterberg invited her neighbor Mike Sadler, local bagpiper as the guest presenter and performer. Sadler is a retired senior graphic designer/web developer at Memory Book Company LLC & Jostens. His “claim to fame" is his 40-year marriage to Circuit Clerk, Susan Sadler.

Sadler was inspired by a church member in Native American dress to pursue his own desire to dress in Scottish attire and learn to play the bagpipes. Bagpipes are a woodwind instrument using enclosed reeds fed from a constant reservoir of air in the form of a bag. He began by researching how to play bagpipes on YouTube. With his purchase of pipes and pursuit of lessons he fulfilled his dream. He honors the fallen at funerals, police and military parades and local events. His fulfillment comes from sharing his love of Scottish history, heritage, and the music. (Video performance included)

Members were invited to participate in the annual “Halloween Costume Parade.”

Approximately 20 members and guests attended the program. Refreshments traditional to Scotland, caramel, chocolate, scones and cheese and crackers, were provided by Chalfant and served by Decker and Stacey Stacey Hill Beard.

The Helen G. Steele Music Club meets the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. Visitors are always welcome. If one decides to join, dues are $40 per year. Heard Memorial Club House is located at, 200 W. Broadway Blvd. in Sedalia.
