The Daughters of Isabella's monthly meeting was at the Knights Hall on March 11. Regent Linda Hoffman called the meeting to order.
The opening prayer was given by Shirley Harms. Ferminia Belmares was installed and introduced as a new member. The Opening Ode was recited, as was the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag. Jean Gallagher read the roll call of officers.
The Treasurer's report was given. Recording Secretary Gallagher discussed the State Newsletter and passed it around. She also gave an update on the membership roster. Gallagher and Treasurer Annette Owens will have a current list of only those who have paid their $20 dues.
Joyce Grinstead reported on the first fish fry where the Daughters supplied the desserts. Katy Hodges reported on cards she has sent to those who are ill. The membership signed Easter cards to be sent to the homebound or unable to come to the meetings.
Bonnie Diefendorf reported on Decline to Sign, which is what one should do if asked to sign a petition that seems to limit abortion but is actually the complete opposite. People from other states are here and paid to go about Sedalia trying to get individuals to sign their petitions. Do not sign these. The wording is very misleading and untruthful.
A letter from the Vitae Foundation to the D of I was read.
Connie Thompson reported on food preparation and help at the Community Cafe, which the Daughters are responsible for the first Tuesday of every other month. The next meal will be May 7.
Gallagher reported on the planned April 25-26 motorcoach trip to Perryville to see the exhibits at the Miraculous Medal, a 1700s French Colonial church and other stops in St. Louis, including St. Louis University and a tour of the Cathedral Basilica. All are welcome and are urged to continue signing up. Sister Mary Ruth Wand will accompany the group of men and women as the Spiritual Advisor.
The May 19 trip will be to Hermann via charter bus to attend the Polka Mass, the Maifest Parade, etc., and return home by Amtrak. All are welcome and are urged to continue signing up. Contact Gallagher or the church rectory for more information.
Linda Hoffman listed upcoming events: the March 17 Mission to St. Patrick's at St. Patrick and the March 24 Women's Retreat to St. Stanislaus. The April Healthy Luncheon will be at Sacred Heart on April 10th. The annual salad supper will take place on May 13.
The May 17-18 Coin Show will be at the Knights Hall. Grinstead asked for volunteers to make sandwiches and other lunch items for the coin dealers. The Coin Show will begin at 11 a.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday.
A donation was voted upon and approved for Totus Tuus, which will be June 16-17.
The International Convention will be Aug. 11-14 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Sept. 27-28 will be the State D of I Workshop in Union. More will be discussed on these events at the April 8 regular meeting. Deacon Hoffmann's Priest Ordination on June 1 will also be discussed including the follow-up events.
Donations for the Good of the Order were given and the meeting ended with the Closing Prayer. The refreshment (social) committee members were Shirley Schlobohm, Carolyn Thomplinson and Mary Lou Westermier.
The Sedalia/Pettis Chapter of the NAACP met on Wednesday, March 6 at Hubbard Apartments, 711 N. Osage Ave. in Sedalia.
The agenda items were as follows:
• The annual Freedom Fund Banquet will be hosted on Saturday, April 20 at Best Western State Fair Inn, 3120 S. Limit Ave. in Sedalia. The guest speaker will be Bishop Paul Jones, Pastor of Burns Chapel Freewill Baptist Church in Sedalia. Tickets are $35 per person and can be purchased from any NAACP member.
• The NAACP is sponsoring a six-night cruise to Jamaica on April 6, 2025, on Carnival Funship Horizon departing from Miami, Florida. The cost starts at $678 per person based on double occupancy. • The Juneteenth celebration is scheduled for Saturday, June 15 at Hubbard Park.
• The Georgetown Cemetery is looking for individuals to assist in cleaning up the cemetery.
• Recruitment Action Plan is a discussion followed to get ideas for recruiting youth to the organization.
• The members discussed Sedalia City Council highlights.
The next NAACP meeting will be hosted on Wednesday, April 3.
The Sedalia/Pettis Chapter of the NAACP meets the first Wednesday of each month at Hubbard Apartments in the “general” area. The executive meeting begins at 3 p.m. and the general meeting at 3:30 p.m.
On Wednesday, March 13, the Helen G. Steele Music Club resumed the “Passport to Music” theme as members gathered once again at the Heard Memorial Club House.
Music Club Vice-President Sheryl Heisterberg opened the meeting with announcements and greeted guests. Secretary Dr. Rhonda Chalfant read the minutes of the previous meeting. Treasurer Stacey Hill Beard presented the Music Club financial report. Heard House Board President Marty Graves announced the success of recent rentals of the Heard House for several events. Sheryl Heisterberg announced positions open for the Executive Board as terms are expiring.
The program “Old-Time Fiddler” was presented by Liz Kehl owner/instructor at Sedalia Strings Academy LLC. She is the principal violist with the Sedalia Symphony, a member of the Lee’s Summit Symphony Orchestra and an award-winning Old-Time Fiddler. Kehl has a bachelor's degree in music education and teaches beginning violin, and all levels of violin, viola, cello, and old-time fiddle. Sedalia Strings provides lessons for public, private, and home-schooled students.
There were approximately 20 members and guests present. Marty Graves and Becky Jaeger Wimann provided and served refreshments.
The Helen G. Steele Music Club meets the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at the Heard Memorial Club House, 200 W. Broadway Blvd. in Sedalia. Visitors are always welcome; after a few visits, should you decide to join, dues are $40 per year.
