Filing ends for April 2023 municipal election

Posted

Tuesday was the last day of candidate filing for multiple municipalities in Pettis County, including cities, school boards and first responder districts for the April 4 municipal election.

Filing began Tuesday, Dec. 6.

City of Sedalia

Five seats are up for election on the Sedalia City Council.

Councilman Tom Oldham has already filed for reelection to his Ward 1 seat for a two-year term.

Ward 2 Councilman Chris Marshall filed for reelection and is facing competition from businesswoman Becca La Strada, who also filed for the two-year term. La Strada served as a Ward 2 councilwoman from 2011 to July 2014, when she submitted her resignation due to personal and health reasons.

In Ward 3, Councilman Bob Hiller has filed for candidacy to retain his seat. Mayor Andrew Dawson appointed Hiller in November to fill the vacancy left by former Councilman Lucas Richardson, who left the council because he moved to a new home outside the Third Ward. Hiller’s appointed term ends in April, so he is running for a one-year term. Ward 3 Councilman Bob Cross has also filed as his two-year term expires in April.

In Ward 4, Councilman Steve Bloess has filed for reelection for a two-year term.

City of La Monte

The terms of Ward 1 Alderman Lisa Jones and Ward 2 Alderman Terry Drum expire in April, and they were the only candidates to file, so there will not be an election for aldermen in La Monte.

Terms are for two years.

City of Smithton

The terms of East Alderman Tom Glenn and West Alderman Jerry Howard expire in April. Glenn filed for reelection, and new candidate Tammy Lewis filed for West Alderman. With no contested races, there will not be an election for aldermen in Smithton.

Terms are for two years.

Village of Hughesville

The terms of David Lopez, Kathy Leisen and Paul James on the Board of Trustees will expire in April. The three incumbents were the only candidates to file, so there will not be an election for trustees in Hughesville.

Terms are for two years.

City of Green Ridge

Two seats are open for the City Council. The seats of Dan Piscopo and Brandon Durrill are up for election, and they were the only candidates to file, so there will not be an election for councilmen in Green Ridge.

Terms are for two years.

City of Houstonia

The terms of Aldermen Jeana Stevens and Rose Mary Crosswhite will expire in April. The two incumbents were the only candidates to file, so there will not be an election for aldermen in Houstonia.

Sedalia School District 200

Board of Education members Scott Gardner, Kenny Coffelt and Michael Stees are up for reelection in the April election. All are three-year terms.

Gardner has filed for reelection, along with new candidates Brad Grupe, Pam Moon and Dale Garrett.

Green Ridge School District

The Board of Education has three three-year terms that will be on the ballot in April. Board members Kenneth Ollison, Bob Stone and Barry White are up for reelection.

Katie Tucker, Tim Carter, Bobby Brown, Tegan Tucker and Laura Brooks Weisenburger have filed for candidacy.

Pettis County R-V (Northwest) School District

Three three-year terms will be on the ballot in April for the Board of Education. These seats are currently held by Dr. Janeene Williams, Sherry Killion and Steve Jolly. Williams, Jolly, Troy Gorrell and Matthew Kahrs have filed as candidates.

Smithton R-VI School District

Board of Education members John Frazee, Sara Moore and Dennis Steele are up for reelection in April. All three seats are three-year terms. Moore, Steele, Devin Gaspard and Todd Asbury have filed.

Pettis County R-XII (Dresden) School District

The Board of Education has three three-year terms up for reelection in April. Those seats are currently held by Michael Wyatt, Shawn Harris and Jeri Gail Uptegrove.

The district could not be reached by press time for filing information.

La Monte R-IV School District

Three three-year seats expire in April. Board members Leah Mahin, Linda Davis and Katie Hall have all filed for reelection. Newcomers Justin Furnell, Ashley Martin and Rocio Rosales have also filed.

Pettis County Ambulance District

Secretary John Nail and member Adam Cox are up for reelection this year on the Board of Directors.

Nail has filed for reelection in District 2, as well as new candidates Rhiannon Foster and Sherri Egbert, all of Sedalia. Foster currently serves as a Ward 4 Councilwoman for the Sedalia City Council.

Kevin Walker, of Sedalia, was the only candidate to file for District 5, so there will not be an election for that uncontested seat.

Pettis County Health Center

After a heavily contested race for three seats in the 2021 municipal election, the Board of Trustees will again have a lengthy list of candidates. Chair Phyllis Domann and Treasurer Brody Kempton have terms that expire in April. Domann filed for reelection, along with new candidates Lynn Alexander, Dr. Philip Fracica, Matthew Smith, Turf Martin and Heather Slagle, all of Sedalia, and Mike Kroeger, of La Monte
