The Sedalia Police Department is searching for a man in connection with a shooting that occurred early Tuesday morning, April 9.

According to an SPD news release, at 12:41 a.m., Sedalia officers rushed to a shooting on the north side of town.

“It was early this morning, before 1 a.m.,” Sedalia Police Chief David Woolery told the Democrat on Tuesday afternoon. “We responded to the 400 block of North Prospect (Avenue) for a gunshot victim.”

Officers arrived to find a female victim lying in the front yard of a residence, suffering from a gunshot wound.

“A domestic situation that escalated,” Woolery explained. “The victim received a gunshot wound to their neck.”

The news release states that the woman was transported from the scene and air-lifted to a regional hospital for advanced care. As of Tuesday afternoon, Woolery said the victim was still receiving treatment.

The department named a male suspect, Bear Hagston, as a person of interest and the subject of an intensive and ongoing manhunt.

According to the release, investigators were called to the scene for processing and investigation, and Pettis County Sheriff’s Office deputies also assisted with the initial investigation. The Sedalia Police Department Criminal Investigations Bureau continues to investigate the incident.

“If anyone has any information in reference to this,” Woolery asked, “I would definitely appreciate it if they would contact Detective Ty Barrett at the Sedalia Police Department at 660-827-7823 ext. 1255.”

Police say domestic violence situations are often their most dangerous calls.

“They're very dangerous situations,” Woolery advised, “for the people involved and for law enforcement as well. They can escalate quickly.”
