Pastor’s Pulpit: Wake up

As we get ready for another election, I would like to ask you a few questions. Have we been sleeping? Have we been dull in our senses? Have we not noticed a turn in the morality of our nation? There are so many crucial issues that are put before us and this election cycle is no different. I believe it is time for America to wake up.
Now most would agree we are living in a different time, a more secular society that has pushed God out of our lifestyle. Christmas TV shows without the manger, Easter without the cross, and prayer out of many society functions. Yet the reminders of our heritage and founding are still found on buildings, statues, and money, “In God we Trust,” for example. (For further information concerning our founding and historical documents, go to www.wallbuilders.com.)
During ‘s colonial period, many of our Forefathers — pastors, teachers, governors, and civil leaders — did all they could to guide the people to seek the favor, protection and guidance of God. They called for routine public observances and special days for all citizens to humble themselves, fast, pray and repent of sin. They knew that sin, unrepented of, would separate our country from God, undermine God’s blessing, and bring His judgment. They believed what scripture says in Proverbs 14:34: Godliness makes a nation great, but sin is a disgrace to any people (NLT). And in Proverbs 29:2: When the godly are in authority, the people rejoice. But when the wicked are in power, they groan (NLT). They believed these things because with few exceptions, our Founding Fathers were steeped in a biblical worldview. Most learned to read by reading the Bible and many were educated from Scripture-filled primers.
Just after armed conflict broke out with the British in and , the Second Continental Congress provided a rallying point that brought Americans together as one nation: a nationwide call to prayer. The resolution called for a day of public humiliation, fasting, and prayer throughout the Colonies on Thursday, July 20th, 1775. Fellow patriot James Warren wrote the following to Samuel Adams: Three millions of people on their knees at once, supplicating the aid of Heaven, is a striking circumstance, and a very singular one in . May the blessings of Heaven follow in answer to our prayers. (Samuel Adams: A Life; Ira Stoll, 2008)
Today, we are at a very pivotal moment in history. Hear what the prophet Jeremiah says to his generation; it is a timeless truth. Jeremiah 29:13 says, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” We need to pursue God with our whole heart once again. It is time to “Wake Up America!”
This is the moment for God’s people to humble ourselves, seek His face and to plead with God for ‘s deliverance and revival! Only God’s intervention in response to our prayers can turn the tide. If ever there was a time for Christians to repent from our sin, from secret sins and addictions that ruin lives, it is now. If there was ever a time for God’s people to turn from sin, pursue holiness and give ourselves sacrificially to impact our culture for righteousness and to save our nation, it is now! It is crucial that each of us vote because that is our duty and we are to vote our moral conscience. Hopefully, that is based on biblically principles. But more importantly, we should make sure our heart is right with God. So, before you vote, cry out to God. Pray, confess, repent and seek a heart of understanding and then vote so our nation would once again be a nation that will follow God.
