STOVER — For the last two years, Andrea Dieckman watched Cole Camp volleyball’s seniors walk off the floor as district runners-up.
Now in her own senior season, Dieckman did not want to experience the same fate.
Dieckman scored the final two points in the Lady Bluebirds’ 25-22, 25-15, 26-24 sweep of Warsaw in the Class 2 District 12 championship Tuesday, Oct. 27, at the Stover Dome.
“I told my setter Madilynn [Ogle] that we are not leaving here without a championship,” Dieckman said. “They’d have to drag me off the floor first because I just won’t give it up. I want to play with them for as long as possible.”
Top-seeded Cole Camp (27-5-2) led by as many as six in the third set — the last time being at 20-14.
No. 3-seeded Warsaw (23-6-1) ignited a 10-4 stretch from that point, tying the set at 24-24 and forcing a win-by-two scenario.
Dieckman blocked an attack from Warsaw senior Karly Keele to set up match point at 25-24.
On the final point, Dieckman spiked the ball twice, but both kill attempts were dug out by the Lady Wildcats’ backline.
The second dig from Warsaw made it back over the net, where Dieckman was in position to put it down again — this time in the center of the court where nobody could get to it.
“This is everything to me,” Dieckman said of getting the final point. “I’ve played for four years and this is our third time being in the championship, first time winning it. I’ve been joking that the third time’s the charm.”
Head coach Abby Massingill said Dieckman’s clutch performance was the culmination of an offseason mindset shift.
“Last year, after the season, her and I had a talk,” Massingill said. “[I told her], ‘Andrea, you have all the ability and talent in the world to be that player, to control the game, to be the one that everybody on the other side of the net fears,’ and going into the offseason and winter ball and into preseason this summer, she has made it her mission to become that player. It was so fun to see her just do it tonight.”
Andrea Dieckman led Cole Camp with 16 kills, two service aces and six blocks. Junior Kodi Dieckman had eight kills, while junior Leah Allison had six and freshman Olivia Vansel had four.
Junior Madilynn Ogle recorded 29 assists and 24 digs. Allison added 14 digs.
The district championship is Cole Camp’s first since 2018 and fifth since 2013.
In their last two district championship appearances, the Lady Bluebirds lost to Stover in straight sets and Fatima in four sets.
“We got tired of being runner-up,” Massingill said. “These girls, they were ready. They prepared. They were the ones that said, ‘Guess what guys? We’re going to win a district title.’ They set the tone and everyone just followed the seniors and the juniors.”
Cole Camp opened this season with a 25-22, 25-21, 25-16 sweep of Warsaw on Aug. 27.
The district championship extended the Lady Bluebirds’ unbeaten streak against Warsaw to 22-0-1 dating back to 2009.
While the season-opening win set the tone for the season, Ogle said achieving the same outcome with a district title on the line meant much more.
“[It feels] amazing,” Ogle said. “This is the most rewarding game we played all season. We worked hard in every practice for this moment.”
Cole Camp advances to host District 11 champion Miller in the Class 2 sectional round at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29.
Miller has made the quarterfinal round in each of the last two years. It won a state championship in 2021.
“We’ve never been in this situation before [with this team],” Massingill said. “I believe the team that we’re playing, they’ve been in a sectional situation before. That’s something new for us, but we just got to remember to focus on playing our game, playing as a team, having fun and surrender the outcome.”
