Firehouse Subs opened its doors Friday, Oct. 30, at its new location at 3400 West Broadway Boulevard in Sedalia, bringing its specialty sandwiches and first-responder-inspired mission to the community.

The restaurant, in the former Sumners Pharmacy location, is the sixth Firehouse Subs location for part-owner Jerry Shreve, who has five other restaurants. Shreve, along with partners Cody Newsome and Kaylee Pratt, spent about six months renovating the building before opening.

“We had to tear a lot of the floor out and different stuff,” Shreve said. “It wasn’t too bad, but we got it done, and we’re excited to be here.”

The partners had been looking for the right Sedalia location for about two years before securing the Broadway Boulevard property.

“This was the big reason why we put it here,” Newsome said. “We were looking for so long, and then when this location became available, me and Jerry hopped on it and got it secured.”

Newsome said the opening was the culmination of two years of work, adding that the partners were encouraged by the community’s response during a soft opening. Even before the doors officially opened at 10 a.m. Friday, customers were waiting outside.

Shreve said franchising made some aspects of opening a restaurant easier because the company provides established menus, inventory lists and other resources. However, renovating an existing building presented its own challenges.

The partners said they believe the location will be a good fit for the restaurant and the community.

“We love the model, the business, and we think the location is going to be wonderful,” Shreve said. “We think Sedalia’s gonna love the product.”

Firehouse Subs distinguishes itself with sandwiches made with fresh bread and meats. Shreve described the menu as featuring gourmet sandwiches different from other sub shops.

“It’s steamed, which infuses the flavors,” Shreve said. “Every one of them is top-notch, and they just taste fantastic.”

The restaurant’s name and theme also reflect its connection to public safety. Firehouse Subs was founded by firefighters, and the company continues to support first responders through its charitable efforts.

Customers can round up their purchases, with the contributions going toward public safety organizations and equipment for local fire and police departments.

Shreve said the restaurants try to identify needs within the communities they serve and help provide equipment when possible. In Warrensburg, for example, the business helped purchase defibrillators for the police department.

“We try to find the needs that the local first responders need, and then we try to fill them,” Shreve said.

Pratt serves as the restaurant’s general manager and oversees daily operations, and steps in wherever needed.

Among the first customers Friday was Sedalia resident Sherry Harris, who said she learned about the opening through Facebook and decided to stop by before her day became busy.

Harris had previously tried Firehouse Subs while visiting Columbia and was looking forward to having the restaurant closer to home.

“It was the best we had,” Harris said. “I got too busy today, so I’m getting a sandwich to take to my husband for lunch.”

She picked up a steak and cheese sandwich for herself and a chicken and cheddar sandwich to take to her husband.

Harris said she expected to return now that Firehouse Subs has opened in Sedalia.

Shreve said the partners are glad to become part of Sedalia.

“We’re excited to be here today, and we can’t wait to get started and serve the community,” Shreve said.
