Sedalian Vivian Cline gives her maiden speech in MidMo Toastmasters Club on Oct. 6 in Boonslick Regional Library.

MidMo Toastmasters Club

“As a little girl, this was just normal,” Vivian Cline told members of MidMo Toastmasters Club recently. Out of her bedroom window all she could see was “a huge tall steel fence…that seemed to go on and on….Beyond the fence, armed guards…, watching everyone.”

“And aircraft flying over our apartment, day after day, night after night,” she said, adding, “And…I thought this was completely normal.”

Cline gave her Ice-Breaker speech at the club’s Oct. 6 meeting at Boonslick Regional Library, and described in vivid detail her growing-up years living the Air Force life in England, Germany and other places where her dad served as a Master Sergeant.

“Mom comes to you and says,’ it’s time to move, honey,’ and I’m thinking, ‘again?’ Cline recalled. This conversation occurred every one to three years, she said, “and I’m thinking, I must change schools again? I began to pack my then-most-precious possessions, my Mrs. Beasely doll,…my Barbie house….”

“I didn’t realize it at the time,” Cline said, “but being a military kid taught me something that has stayed with me my entire life: the importance of education, self-control, discipline, a strong work ethic, integrity, and treating others the way you want to be treated. But above all, living for the Lord.” Concluding her speech, Cline said, “When someone asks me, ‘Where did you grow up?’ I still have a hard time giving a simple answer….I’ve always replied,”Everywhere,” and that’s not such a bad place to grow up’.”

Kathryn Marshall gave a three-minute evaluation of Cline’s speech.

Gina Rogers served as Table Topicsmaster.

Guests at the meeting were Todd Swope, from Independence, and Yolanda Fox, from Knob

The next meeting of the club will be on Oct. 20, when Cline will give the Toastmasters manual’s second project, whose goal includes, “making your message clear, with supporting material directly contributing to that message.”

Those interested in improving their speaking and leadership skills are invited to MidMo Toastmasters Club’s meetings at 7 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. Additional information may be obtained from P.C. Thomas (660-826-9988 or p.c.thomas@charter.net).
